Introduction to the Dukan Diet

Are you looking for a diet
that will take off the pounds and keep them off? People in France seem to have this figured out – the French are significantly less obese than Americans. Why is that? Let me offer a possible explanation…

Dukan Diet History

The Dukan diet was first introduced by Dr Pierre Dukan, a French medical doctor who has specialized in human nutrition since 1973. The Dukan diet was developed 10 years ago and has gained immense popularity since it was first created.

The Dukan diet was first born in the young doctor Pierre Dukan’s mind when he faced patients who would do anything to lose fat. Patients who went through starvation phases (especially with meat), due to several other diets, were told to eat nothing but meat by Dr. Dukan. The Dukan Diet plan is based around eating high-protein foods while severely limiting all carbohydrates including fruits, starchy vegetables, legumes and whole grains.

Dukan Diet in the News

According to media reports, over 1.5 million French women rely on the diet to maintain their figures and apparently politicians, film stars and high profile models live the Dukan life, all of them seduced by its promise of the ultimate dieters dream – permanent slenderness while eating what you like.

It has also been used by models and celebrities including Giselle Bundchen and Jennifer Lopez to return to their pre-baby bodies. That attracted the attention of dieters across the world. The Dukan Diet has four successive phases: The Attack phase (also known as “pure protein phase”), The Cruise phase, The Consolidation phase and The Stabilization phase.

The Dukan Diet Works

The Dukan diet is effective because it is based on the nutritional value of high protein foods and the way the body responds to proteins. Unlike the other two main food groups, carbohydrates and fats, proteins are hardest for the body to digest. It can take up to 3 hours for the body to react to protein digestion and this process burns approximately 30% calories that are originally consumed. In simple words, more consumption of high protein food increases the body’s calorie expenditure. High Protein foods are also lower in calories than carbohydrates and fats. To sum up, we can say that high protein food not only tends to increase the calorie expenditure of the body but also helps in consuming less calories as high protein food leaves people feeling fuller for longer because of the slow rate of digestion. According to Dr. Dukan, the diet has a strong educational value and shows dieters the relative importance of each food group based on the order in which they are integrated into their diet. It starts with vital foods, then introduces, in succession, indispensable foods, essential foods and important foods, finishing off with superfluous foods.

In addition to its sound scientific logic, the Dukan Diet menu lets you “eat whatever you want” as long as what you want is protein. The Dukan diet is a very interesting and attractive weight loss program for dieters as it promises the holy grail of weight loss promises, that once the target weight loss strategy is reached, weight level is maintained forever and one can return to unrestrained eating. It acknowledges the real pleasure to be had from eating and, incredibly, promises efficient weight loss while eating unlimited quantities of real food.”
